From Pomerol on Bordeaux’s Right Bank, Pétrus has long held a special place among wine lovers and collectors around the world.

Among its many vintages, 2005 is regarded as one of Bordeaux’s great modern years. Known for its ripeness, structure and balance, the vintage was built for long ageing and continues to attract attention more than two decades after the harvest.

The Pétrus vineyard is located in Pomerol, on Bordeaux’s Right Bank.

Covering only around 11.4 to 11.5 hectares, the vineyard is characterised by iron-rich clay soils, particularly the distinctive blue clay closely associated with Pétrus.

Unlike many of the celebrated estates of Bordeaux’s Left Bank, Pétrus is centred almost entirely on Merlot.

Today, the vineyard is planted exclusively to Merlot. At the time of the 2005 vintage, however, a small proportion of Cabernet Franc was still planted alongside it.

A limited piece of land, planted with a grape particularly suited to its soils.

The identity of Pétrus comes not simply from its rarity, but from the distinctive terroir of this small vineyard.

The 2005 Vintage

More than twenty years on, 2005 remains one of Bordeaux’s most highly regarded vintages.

Ripe fruit, firm structure and well-balanced acidity defined the year.

From the outset, the vintage was considered particularly well suited to long-term ageing. In more recent tastings, many of the finest 2005 Bordeaux wines have begun to reveal the greater complexity that comes with maturity.

From the power of youth toward the nuance that develops with time.

Pétrus 2005 is now entering that transition.

A Name Known Beyond “Château”

Bordeaux is home to countless historic châteaux.

Pétrus is different. It is generally known simply as “Pétrus”, rather than “Château Pétrus”.

Produced from a vineyard of only around eleven hectares, it has nevertheless become one of the defining names of Pomerol and one of Bordeaux’s rarest and most valuable wines.

Its identity does not depend on an elaborate name or classification.

The wine itself became the name.

That is part of what makes Pétrus so distinctive.
