YUZA 2026 & Fairy in Summer | Bourbon Cask Core and a Mizunara Summer

Two 2026 releases from YUZA, each showing a different side of the same distillery.

The first is YUZA 2026, built from carefully selected bourbon cask-matured whisky and positioned by the distillery as a reference point for the YUZA house style.

The second is Fairy in Summer, a limited release launched in July 2026 and made with rare Mizunara cask-matured whisky.

Both are single malts from the same distillery, yet they play very different roles.

One defines the core of YUZA. The other shows how far that core can be extended.

A Distillery That Began in 2018

YUZA Distillery began whisky production in 2018 in Yuza, Yamagata Prefecture.

Distillation started on 1 November 2018, and the first release, YUZA First edition 2022, arrived in February 2022.

The distillery sits at the foot of Mount Chokai.

Its production uses soft water derived from the mountain’s underground water system, while the cool climate of Yuza shapes the maturation of the spirit.

YUZA describes itself as a small distillery that cannot rely on mass production, choosing instead to mature its whisky until it reaches the quality the team is looking for.

YUZA 2026 — The House Style Through Bourbon Casks

Released in March 2026, YUZA 2026 continues the distillery’s core single malt series.

The whisky is composed from selected bourbon cask-matured spirit.

The house style is expressed in three words:

Clean, sweet and fruity.

Vanilla and honey-like sweetness are joined by bright fruit, while the texture remains fine and smooth rather than heavy.

Compared with the early releases, the distillery describes YUZA 2026 as having gained greater depth through further maturation.

It is therefore one of the clearest ways to understand what YUZA currently considers its own signature.

Fairy in Summer — A Mizunara-Led Variation

Fairy in Summer was released in limited quantities in July 2026.

The key difference is the use of rare Mizunara cask-matured whisky.

The aromatic profile moves toward caramel, dried fruit, floral fruit notes and a more pronounced woody character.

At 55% ABV, it is bottled at a higher strength than YUZA 2026 at 51%.

Yet the intention is not simply greater power.

The distillery highlights its smooth texture, layered depth and a fresher finish that keeps the whisky from feeling overly dense.

Where YUZA 2026 establishes the house style through bourbon casks, Fairy in Summer explores a different direction through Mizunara.

The “Summer Fairy” of Mount Chokai

The name Fairy in Summer is linked to Chokai Fusuma, an alpine flower found around Mount Chokai.

YUZA presents the flower as a “summer fairy,” using its delicate appearance as part of the image behind the whisky.

Mount Chokai is more than a motif for the distillery.

The water used for production and the wider natural environment surrounding the distillery are both connected to the mountain.

That gives Fairy in Summer a meaning beyond simply being a seasonal limited edition.

It ties the whisky back to the landscape that defines YUZA itself.

The Core and the Variation

YUZA 2026 is centred on bourbon casks and the distillery’s core house style.

Fairy in Summer introduces Mizunara cask-matured whisky as a more limited expression.

They are not meant to sit in a simple hierarchy.

Instead, the two bottles show how YUZA can preserve its clean, fruity character while allowing cask choice to reshape the whisky around it.

YUZA is still a young distillery, having begun production only in 2018.

That also means each year brings older stocks, broader blending options and a clearer sense of identity.

YUZA 2026 and Fairy in Summer show that development from two different angles.
