Hibiki 21 Years Old | Suntory’s Art of Blending Mature Whisky
Hibiki 21 Years Old is not defined by age alone.
Every malt whisky used in the blend is aged for at least 21 years.
The grain whiskies are also selected from stocks aged 21 years or more.
Rather than presenting one long-aged spirit on its own, Hibiki 21 brings together different mature whiskies and shapes them into a single harmony.
Its identity lies not simply in maturation, but in blending.
Built Entirely from Whiskies Aged 21 Years or More
According to Suntory, all of the malt whiskies used for Hibiki 21 Years Old are matured for at least 21 years.
The grain whiskies selected for the blend are likewise aged for 21 years or more.
The point is not simply to use old whisky, but to select mature components with different aromas, textures and finishes, then bring them together without losing balance.
Suntory’s official tasting notes describe aromas of raisin, apricot, strawberry jam and vanilla.
On the palate, the whisky moves toward biscuit, toffee, sweet-and-sour fruit and spice.
It has the weight expected from long maturation, yet retains the floral, fruit-led sweetness associated with Hibiki.
Hibiki Was Created in 1989
Hibiki was launched in 1989, the year of Suntory’s 90th anniversary.
Second-generation Master Blender Keizo Saji set out to create a whisky that would bring together the full breadth of Suntory’s accumulated whisky-making expertise.
Over decades, Suntory had built up a wide range of malt and grain whiskies with very different characters.
The name “Hibiki,” meaning resonance or harmony, reflects the idea of allowing those differences to sound together rather than forcing them into uniformity.
Today, Yamazaki and Hakushu are internationally recognised as single malts, but Hibiki represents another side of Suntory: the craft of deciding how different whiskies should meet.
A Blend Recognised Around the World
Hibiki 21 Years Old has repeatedly received major international awards.
At the World Whiskies Awards, it was named World’s Best Blended Whisky in 2010, 2011, 2013, 2016 and 2017.
In 2017, it also received the Supreme Champion Spirit title at the International Spirits Challenge.
These awards are significant not because they prove rarity, but because they recognise the quality of the blend itself.
A 24-Faceted Bottle Designed Around Time

The Hibiki decanter is cut into 24 facets.
Suntory explains that the number represents both the 24 hours of the day and the 24 seasonal divisions of the traditional Japanese calendar.
The label uses Echizen washi paper, while the “Hibiki” calligraphy was created by master calligrapher Tansetsu Ogino.
Inside the bottle are whiskies matured for more than two decades; outside it, the design is also built around the passage of time.
Hibiki 21 expresses time not only through age, but through the way the whisky is presented.
More Than a “21-Year-Old Whisky”
Age statements naturally draw attention to how long a whisky has been matured.
With Hibiki 21, that is only part of the story.
Malts aged 21 years or more.
Grain whiskies aged 21 years or more.
Different distilleries, different casks and different styles, selected and assembled into a single whisky.
Hibiki 21 is where the rarity of long-aged stocks and the work of the blender become equally important.
