Exhibition & Sale: Three Generations of Nemoto Glass Studio
Founded in the postwar years and guided through three generations, Nemoto Glass Studio has continuously pushed the boundaries of Edo Kiriko.
This exhibition brings together the creative legacies of founder Yukio Nemoto, his son Tatsuya, and grandson Kōshō—offering a luminous journey where tradition and innovation intersect.
The first-generation master, Yukio Nemoto, established the studio in 1959 and was the first Edo Kiriko artisan to receive the prestigious Medal with Yellow Ribbon. Known for his bold style and masterful execution of classic patterns, he left behind numerous works now held in museum collections, as well as pieces presented to the Imperial Household and Prime Minister’s Office.
Tatsuya Nemoto, the second generation, inherited his father’s techniques while bringing a more refined sensibility. His technical prowess extended to the intricate gravier engraving method, and his hallmark work Shizuku (“Droplet”) is celebrated for its daring curves. Blending traditional motifs with contemporary elements, his meticulously crafted pieces—even to the base—introduced a new elegance to the world of Edo Kiriko.
The third generation, Kōshō Nemoto, combines his grandfather’s boldness and his father’s delicacy through a distinctly modern artistic lens. Embracing the theme “From Craft to Art,” he seeks to elevate Edo Kiriko beyond the realm of craft. His original cutwork—radiating with a seductive brilliance—has drawn acclaim as sculptural glass art, with some pieces reaching values in the millions of yen.
This exhibition presents two significant works from each of the three generations—six pieces in total—all of which are available for acquisition. Through them, we invite you to trace the evolving lineage of beauty carried across time, and to discover the unique brilliance of Edo Kiriko as shaped by the Nemoto family.
During the exhibition period, video interviews with Tatsuya and Kōshō Nemoto will be screened in-store. We hope you enjoy not only their artistry, but the personalities behind it as well.
To coincide with the exhibition Three Generations of Nemoto Glass Studio, a select collection of Old Fashioned glasses by third-generation Kōshō Nemoto is now available. Among them are several exquisite new designs making their debut with this arrival.
With only one piece available per design on this occasion, we encourage you to take this opportunity to experience the quiet brilliance of his work firsthand.
