Nemoto Glass Crafts “Rou” Barrel-Shaped Edo Kiriko | Flickering Flame in Cut Crystal
Fine kiku-tsunagi latticework fills the glass while sweeping curves rise through it like flames.
Nemoto Glass Crafts “Rou” Barrel-Shaped Glass brings the signature design of third-generation Edo Kiriko artisan Kosho Nemoto into a rounded barrel form that narrows toward the rim and base.
The idea behind Rou is candlelight: a flame moving in the wind, never holding exactly the same shape twice. Nemoto translates that movement into glass through deep flowing cuts and extremely fine traditional pattern work.
Rou: an interpretation of a quietly flickering flame

“Rou” is one of Kosho Nemoto’s defining designs.
In 2019, Rou won the top Gold Prize at the 2nd Kita-Ohmi Sake Glass Competition.
The competition described the work as an expression of a quiet, sensuous flickering flame: bold flowing lines evoke fire moving in the wind, while delicate kiku-tsunagi cuts between them suggest countless candles shimmering into the distance.
The design is therefore not a literal picture of fire. It captures movement, instability and changes in light.
Every curve follows a different path

The defining feature of Rou is Nemoto Glass Crafts’ use of curved cutting.
Deep sweeping lines rise upward through the glass. They may appear rhythmic at first glance, but each follows a slightly different angle and trajectory.
Kosho Nemoto has explained that he does not completely fix a design before cutting. He first establishes the major structural cuts, then responds to the balance of the piece and lets his hand move almost as if following the flow of water.
That process means even works sharing the same Rou name retain individual nuances.
Kiku-tsunagi creates tension behind the flame
Against those large curves sits the extremely fine kiku-tsunagi pattern.
Kiku-tsunagi, a linked chrysanthemum motif, is one of the traditional patterns associated with Edo Kiriko. Repeated minute cuts create a densely sparkling surface when light reaches the glass.
In Rou, broad flowing cuts move through this precise background almost like flames breaking through a field of light.
The contrast between disciplined repetition and free movement gives the piece its distinctive sense of tension.
A barrel shape makes the flame more three-dimensional
The piece presented here differs from the more familiar straight-sided old-fashioned version of Rou through its barrel-shaped body.
The glass swells gently through the centre before narrowing toward the top and bottom. Because of that curvature, each flowing cut changes in appearance as the glass is turned.
A line that appears as a single flame from one angle overlaps another from the next, while reflections shift with the position of the light.
For a design built around flickering fire, the changing perspective of a barrel form feels particularly natural.
Three generations of Nemoto Glass Crafts
Nemoto Glass Crafts is an Edo Kiriko workshop based in Kameido, Tokyo.
The Edo Kiriko Cooperative records the workshop as having been founded in 1959. Today, second-generation artisan Tatsuya Nemoto works alongside third-generation Kosho Nemoto.
Techniques and discipline have passed from founder Yukio Nemoto to Tatsuya and then Kosho, while each generation has continued to introduce new forms of expression.
Kosho has described “modern Rou” as entirely his own original design — an example of how traditional Edo Kiriko vocabulary can become a personal artistic language.
Crystal, sharp edges and hand-finished brilliance
Current Rou old-fashioned glasses from Nemoto Glass Crafts use full crystal glass made by KAGAMI.
The workshop emphasises sharp edges, precise pattern cutting and the brilliance produced by careful finishing.
When light enters the cut surfaces, the sweeping curves and fine kiku-tsunagi rise visually away from the body of the glass.
In a dark setting, even the light projected around the vessel can feel like part of the work. The rounded barrel body shown here intensifies that three-dimensional effect.

Deep curves inspired by flickering flame move through an exceptionally fine field of kiku-tsunagi. This barrel-shaped version brings an additional sense of movement and depth to one of Kosho Nemoto’s signature designs.
At the time of writing, a dedicated official online product page for the barrel-shaped Rou could not be confirmed. This article therefore separates verified information about the Rou series and its maker from characteristics visible in the physical barrel-shaped work.
