Yoichi 1989 20 Year Old | 3,500 Bottles from a Single Vintage
Distilled at Yoichi in 1989, matured for 20 years and bottled in 2009 as a limited release of 3,500 bottles.
Yoichi Single Malt 1989 is a vintage Japanese single malt made entirely from malt whiskies distilled at Nikka’s Yoichi Distillery in 1989 and matured for two decades before bottling.
Bottled at 55% ABV, it combines whiskies matured in different cask types, including new oak, re-charred casks and sherry butts, together with both lighter and more heavily peated Yoichi malt styles.
Distilled in 1989, bottled in 2009

The defining feature of Yoichi 1989 is not only its age statement, but its single vintage identity.
The malt whiskies were distilled and filled into cask at Yoichi in 1989, then matured for 20 years before being bottled in 2009.
During the late 2000s and early 2010s, Nikka released a series of long-aged vintage single malts built around specific distillation years. The 1989 became one of the most highly regarded bottles in that sequence.
A 3,500-bottle release built from several Yoichi styles
Collector and auction records document Yoichi 1989 as a release of only 3,500 bottles.
The whisky combines several types of malt distilled in 1989, including spirit matured in new oak, re-charred wood and sherry casks, with different levels of peat.
Rather than presenting the personality of one individual cask, the bottle builds a layered portrait of Yoichi from whiskies sharing the same distillation year.
Coal-fired distillation: the core of Yoichi
Yoichi Distillery was founded in Hokkaido in 1934 by Masataka Taketsuru, who searched Japan for a location that could recreate the cool, humid conditions he valued in Scotland.
Its most famous production method is direct coal-fired distillation, an increasingly rare technique in the whisky world.
Coal fires heat the pot stills directly, contributing to the powerful, weighty and roasted character associated with Yoichi spirit.
The cool Hokkaido climate, maritime influence, water from the Yoichi River and coal-fired stills together shape a spirit known for body, smoke and savoury depth.
Bottled at 55% after two decades of maturation
Yoichi 1989 was bottled at 55% ABV.
The relatively high bottling strength preserves much of the concentration developed during its twenty years in cask.
Historical tasting records mention raisin, fig, wood, smoke, char, spice and a salty impression.
Mature fruit and oak sweetness sit alongside oiliness, smoke and maritime savouriness — a style in which age softens Yoichi’s power without removing its structure.
Best Japanese Single Malt at the 2010 World Whiskies Awards
Yoichi 1989 was named Best Japanese Single Malt Whisky in the 13–20 year category at the World Whiskies Awards 2010.
The award is listed in Nikka’s official competition history and followed the global recognition of Yoichi 1987, which had been named World’s Best Single Malt in 2008.
Together, these releases marked a period when long-aged Yoichi was becoming firmly established on the international whisky stage.
1989 was also a key year in Nikka history
The distillation year itself carries additional significance.
In 1989, Nikka launched Yoichi 12 Year Old and Sendai-Miyagikyo 12 Year Old, marking an important step in its single malt portfolio.
The same year also saw Scotland’s Ben Nevis Distillery join the Nikka group.
Two decades later, whisky distilled at Yoichi during that milestone year returned as a vintage bottling in its own right.
