Château Palmer 1995 | 51% Merlot in a Sunny Margaux Vintage
A 1995 Palmer driven by sunshine and Merlot: 51% Merlot in a Margaux Third Growth known for silk, velvet and aromatic depth.
Château Palmer 1995 is the grand vin of one of Margaux’s most distinctive estates. The blend is 51% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon and 9% Petit Verdot.
The estate itself describes 1995 as a vintage of warmth, sunshine and Merlot. A hot, dry summer produced concentrated, richly aromatic fruit, while September rain restarted ripening and allowed each variety to be harvested at optimum maturity.
A Third Growth with a reputation beyond its classification

Château Palmer is one of the defining estates of Margaux on Bordeaux’s Left Bank.
It was officially classified Troisième Cru Classé — Third Growth in the 1855 Classification.
Yet Palmer’s identity has long extended beyond the number of its ranking. The estate is known for combining Margaux perfume and finesse with generous body and an unusually soft, velvety texture.
Merlot is central to the Palmer style
Unlike many leading Médoc estates where Cabernet Sauvignon overwhelmingly dominates, Palmer has traditionally placed Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon on almost equal footing.
The château describes its signature blend as nearly equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, completed by a small amount of Petit Verdot.
Merlot brings roundness, flesh and softness; Cabernet contributes structure and length; Petit Verdot adds spice. Together they create the floral, rich and tactile character associated with Palmer.
1995: one of the hottest and driest summers in half a century
The 1995 vintage was defined by early development and a remarkably dry summer.
Fine weather settled in from April, and full flowering arrived on 4 June, around ten days ahead of schedule.
June, July and August formed one of the hottest and driest summers in fifty years. Temperatures reached 37°C on 20 and 25 July, while only 89mm of rain fell across the three months.
By August, persistent heat had placed the vines under stress and slowed ripening.
Cooler, wetter weather arrived in September. Rather than diluting the fruit, the rain restarted ripening while the vineyard remained healthy, allowing each grape variety to be picked at optimum maturity.
Harvest from 18 September to 2 October
Harvest for Château Palmer 1995 ran from 18 September to 2 October.
The final blend was 51% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon and 9% Petit Verdot.
With Merlot making up more than half the wine, the blend reflects the character of the growing season particularly clearly.
The hot, dry summer brought richness and concentration; September conditions completed ripening without sacrificing balance.
A “Mediterranean” Palmer: sunny and Latin
Palmer calls 1995 a vintage of sunshine and Merlot.
In its own vintage library, the estate goes further, describing the wine as “Mediterranean — sunny and Latin.”
The phrase refers to more than high temperatures.
It captures the sense of ripe, fleshy fruit, generous concentration and aromatic warmth that the year brought to Palmer, while retaining the elegance expected of Margaux.
Flowers, fruit and spice wrapped in silk and velvet
The grand vin of Château Palmer is defined by aromas of flowers, fruit and spice and an unusually tactile structure.
The château itself evokes silk, the nobility of leather and the caress of velvet when describing Palmer’s texture.
In 1995, that inherent softness was reinforced by the vintage’s ripe, concentrated fruit.
After three decades of bottle age, a well-stored example may show the transition from primary fruit toward more mature notes such as dried flowers, leather, earth, spice and tobacco.
20 to 22 months of élevage
Château Palmer gives its grand vin 20 to 22 months of ageing in barrels and large oak vessels.
The objective is not simply to add oak flavour, but to allow time to integrate fruit, tannin and the message of the vineyard.
That extended élevage is central to the rounded, supple texture that defines mature Palmer.
