Château Lafite Rothschild 2000 | A Millennium Vintage from Pauillac’s First Growth
A First Growth Pauillac from the turn of the century and the millennium.
Château Lafite Rothschild 2000 is one of the defining wines of Bordeaux’s celebrated 2000 vintage, produced by the First Growth estate in Pauillac.
The blend is 93% Cabernet Sauvignon and 7% Merlot, combining depth of dark fruit and firm structure with the purity, finesse and exceptionally long finish associated with Lafite.
A First Growth defined by elegance
Château Lafite Rothschild was classified Premier Cru Classé — First Growth in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification.
The Rothschild family acquired the estate in 1868, and its reputation has continued through generations.
Lafite is not defined simply by power. Cabernet Sauvignon brings the blackcurrant, cedar, graphite, tobacco and mineral character associated with Pauillac, yet the estate’s hallmark is precision: density without heaviness, structure with delicacy, and a finish that seems to extend quietly rather than forcefully.
2000: a landmark Bordeaux vintage

The 2000 vintage is regarded as one of the great modern years in Bordeaux.
At Lafite, ripe Cabernet Sauvignon produced a wine with concentrated fruit, substantial tannic structure and the balance required for very long ageing.
Contemporary tastings described captivating aromatics, a palate combining power with finesse, and exceptional length supported by a remarkable tannic foundation.
93% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot
The final blend of the 2000 vintage was 93% Cabernet Sauvignon and 7% Merlot.
The exceptionally high Cabernet proportion gives the wine its clear spine of cassis, graphite, cedar and tobacco.
Merlot adds roundness and flesh, softening the edges of a powerful vintage without obscuring the linear character of Lafite.
A bottle made especially for the year 2000
The 2000 Lafite is distinctive not only for the wine inside, but also for the bottle itself.
Since 1996, Lafite bottles have carried an embossed version of the Rothschild family’s five-arrow emblem on the shoulder. For the 2000 vintage, the number “2000” appears at the centre of the emblem, marking both the turn of the century and the millennium.
That detail gives the wine additional significance for collectors and for anyone for whom the year 2000 carries personal meaning.

Graphite, cassis, tobacco and flowers
Historical tasting notes for Lafite 2000 highlight graphite, blackcurrant, sweet tobacco and floral notes.
Even after long bottle ageing, the wine has been noted for retaining remarkable youthfulness, with concentrated fruit supported by a refined and persistent structure.
With further maturity, cedar, cigar box, earth, graphite and dried floral tones emerge alongside the remaining fruit.
Around 20 months in new French oak
The technical information for the 2000 vintage records approximately 20 months of maturation in new French oak barrels after blending.
Lafite is also known for maintaining its own cooperage in Pauillac, allowing the estate precise control over an important part of the ageing process.
The objective is not simply to add oak flavour, but to integrate fruit, tannin and mineral structure into the refined texture associated with the château.
A different expression of First Growth Pauillac
Pauillac is home to several First Growth estates, each with a distinct interpretation of Cabernet Sauvignon.
Château Mouton Rothschild, for example, is known for generous fruit, power and its changing artist labels. Lafite, by contrast, is often defined by precision, transparency and a long, finely drawn finish.
