Vega Sicilia Único Reserva Especial | A Fine Wine Built from Several Vintages
For many great wines, the vintage is part of the identity.
Vega Sicilia Único Reserva Especial deliberately has no single vintage.
Instead, Vega Sicilia selects outstanding years of its flagship wine, Único, and blends them together. The aim is not to capture one harvest, but to express something more constant: the house style of Vega Sicilia across time.
A fine wine built from several vintages, not one

Único Reserva Especial is a non-vintage red wine, but “non-vintage” here does not mean simpler or younger.
Only selected vintages of Único, Vega Sicilia’s flagship red, are used in the blend. Each release therefore brings together wines born in different years.
For example, the Reserva Especial released for sale in 2025 combines Único from 2011, 2012 and 2013. In this context, “2025” identifies the release, not the year in which all of its grapes were harvested.
The composition changes from one release to another. What remains constant is the idea: balance the strengths of several great Único vintages in a single wine.
“Reserva Especial” comes from an old Spanish tradition
The concept predates modern Vega Sicilia.
Historically in Spain, the small number of wineries able to bottle their own wine sometimes made two styles: a wine from the current harvest and a second, non-vintage wine blended from their best previous harvests. This special blend was known as Reserva Especial — literally, “Special Reserve.”
Vega Sicilia says this practice has now almost disappeared outside this wine. Único Reserva Especial therefore preserves a piece of Spanish wine history that is rarely encountered in contemporary fine red wine.
It begins with Único — a wine that already takes at least ten years
The wines used for Reserva Especial are not ordinary young base wines.
Único itself spends a minimum of ten years ageing between wood and bottle before release. Vega Sicilia uses both French and American oak, new and previously used 225-litre barrels, and much larger wooden vats during this long maturation.
Reserva Especial then draws on selected Único vintages to create a multi-year expression.
This is the key distinction between the two wines. A vintage Único expresses a particular growing season through Vega Sicilia’s long ageing process; Reserva Especial uses several completed years as the material for a new blend.
What is Tinto Fino?
The principal red grape at Vega Sicilia is Tinto Fino, the local name in Ribera del Duero for Tempranillo, Spain’s best-known red grape variety.
Reserva Especial combines Tinto Fino with a smaller proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon. The exact proportions can vary by release. The 2025 release, for example, is 96% Tinto Fino and 4% Cabernet Sauvignon.
For readers outside Spain, “Ribera del Duero” refers to the wine region along the upper Duero River in northern-central Spain, where high elevation and marked differences between daytime and night-time temperatures shape some of the country’s most age-worthy Tempranillo-based reds.
Vega Sicilia and the idea of time
Professional wine production at Vega Sicilia began in 1864, in the estate at Valbuena de Duero.
Time remains central to the winery’s identity: years in barrel and bottle for Único, followed in Reserva Especial by the additional act of bringing different vintages together.
A single-vintage Único records one year. Reserva Especial does something different: it treats several years as components of the final wine.
That is why the absence of a vintage is not an absence of time. It is the opposite — several distinct moments are preserved in the same bottle.
Vega Sicilia Único Reserva Especial
Spain | Ribera del Duero | Red wine | Predominantly Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) with Cabernet Sauvignon | Non-vintage blend
Made by blending selected vintages of Vega Sicilia Único, Reserva Especial continues an old Spanish tradition while offering an unusual idea in fine wine: not the expression of one harvest, but the balance of several great years in a single bottle.
