Karuizawa 15 Year Old | Before Karuizawa Became a Legend
However, distillation ceased in 2000, and the distillery was later closed. The Karuizawa bottles that remain on the market today were all made from spirit distilled there before production ended.
This Karuizawa 15 Year Old is an older bottling released while the distillery was still active.
1976 — Karuizawa Releases Japan’s First Single Malt
Today, the term “single malt” is commonplace in Japanese whisky.
In the 1970s, however, the domestic market was dominated by blended whisky.
Against that backdrop, Sanraku Ocean released Karuizawa in 1976.
The Japanese Whisky Information Centre also records it in its historical timeline as Japan’s first single malt, “Karuizawa.”
Why Was Karuizawa Whisky So Rich?

The former Karuizawa Distillery had several distinctive elements in its production.
The malted barley used was Golden Promise, imported from Scotland.
Fermentation took place in wooden washbacks using water from the Mount Asama area, before distillation in four small pot stills. Sherry casks also played an important role in maturation.
Golden Promise is a barley variety that is far less common today due in part to its relatively low yield, but it was once highly regarded in Scotch whisky production.
At Karuizawa, long maturation in sherry casks helped create whiskies with deep colour and a powerful malt character.
Even through the bottle, the rich amber hue gives a sense of the style for which the distillery became known.
Distillation Ends in 2000
Karuizawa’s reputation changed dramatically after production had already ceased.
The distillery stopped distilling in 2000.
Production never resumed, and the site ultimately closed in 2011. Several hundred remaining casks were sold, with the surviving whisky gradually released in later years, often as single-cask bottlings.
It was then that whisky enthusiasts around the world began to reassess the spirit produced at Karuizawa.
Today, long-aged single casks and whiskies distilled during the 1960s to 1980s regularly appear at major international auctions.
This 15 Year Old, however, belongs to a different period.
It is not a Karuizawa released after the distillery had become internationally celebrated as a closed distillery.
It comes from a time when Karuizawa was still being sold as an active whisky brand.
That is what makes this particular bottle especially interesting.
A Karuizawa From Another Era — Down to the Glass Stopper
This bottle comes in a rounded decanter-style form with a clear glass stopper.
Its presentation feels distinctly different from most contemporary Japanese whisky bottles, preserving the character of the period in which it was released.
The label also carries the words:
“Floral & Velvety”
Today, Karuizawa is often discussed in terms of rarity, collectability and auction prices.
But when this bottle was produced, it was not created as a future collector’s item.
It was made to be enjoyed as a 15-year-old malt whisky.
Knowing what happened to Karuizawa afterwards makes that simple fact surprisingly compelling today.
Karuizawa Before It Became a Legend
1956 — distillation begins at the foot of Mount Asama.
1976 — the first Karuizawa single malt is released.
2000 — distillation ceases.
2011 — the distillery closes.
No new whisky from the original Karuizawa Distillery will ever be produced.
That is why this 15 Year Old is more than simply an old premium whisky.
It preserves a moment from when Karuizawa was still an active distillery, long before its bottles became sought-after collector’s items around the world.
That is what makes Karuizawa 15 Year Old so fascinating to encounter today.
