Blanton’s Original Single Barrel | The Bourbon That Defined Single Barrel
In 1984, Blanton’s turned the idea of tasting bourbon one barrel at a time into a commercial whiskey category.
Blanton’s Original Single Barrel is bottled from one selected barrel rather than from a blend of many barrels. That means each bottling retains the small differences created by its individual cask and its position during maturation.
The barrel’s identity is written onto the label, while the horse-and-jockey stopper above it connects another Kentucky tradition — thoroughbred racing — with bourbon.
The first commercial single-barrel bourbon
Blanton’s was introduced in 1984 by Master Distiller Elmer T. Lee.
Lee created the bourbon in honour of Albert B. “Colonel” Blanton, the influential distillery president who had spent decades at the site now known as Buffalo Trace Distillery.
Buffalo Trace describes Blanton’s as the world’s first commercial single-barrel bourbon and the first modern expression to establish single-barrel bourbon as a premium category.
Rather than blending many barrels to make them taste consistent, the concept is to select one exceptional barrel and preserve its individual character.
What “single barrel” actually means
Most bourbon brands combine whiskey from multiple barrels before bottling. This allows the producer to create a consistent house style from batch to batch.
A single-barrel bourbon takes a different approach: the whiskey in the bottle comes from one individual barrel.
Even when barrels contain the same original spirit, maturation can vary with oak, warehouse position and temperature. Blanton’s does not attempt to erase every one of those differences.
Instead, individual barrels are tasted and selected when they meet the profile required for the brand. Small variations from barrel to barrel therefore remain part of the experience.
Warehouse H: the metal-clad home of Blanton’s
Blanton’s matures in Warehouse H at Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky.
Built in 1935 by Albert B. Blanton, it is the distillery’s only metal-clad ageing warehouse.
Metal responds quickly to changes in outside temperature. In Kentucky’s hot summers and cold winters, those swings affect how whiskey moves in and out of the oak, creating a particularly active maturation environment.
Colonel Blanton was known for selecting especially good “honey barrels” from the central parts of Warehouse H for family, friends and distinguished guests. That practice later inspired Elmer T. Lee when he created Blanton’s.
The barrel’s history is written on the bottle
One of the clearest visual expressions of the single-barrel idea is the label.
Each bottle records details such as the dump date, barrel number and warehouse location, with information filled in by hand.
For readers unfamiliar with bourbon terminology, the “dump date” is simply the day the whiskey was emptied from its ageing barrel for bottling.
Blanton’s carries no stated age on the label. The Japanese distributor instead describes the process as tasting barrels individually and selecting only those judged to have reached their peak of maturity.
Eight horse stoppers spell BLANTON’S

The horse-and-jockey stopper is more than a logo.
Since 1999, Blanton’s has produced eight different stopper designs, showing successive stages of a horse race.
Each carries one letter — B, L, A, N, T, O, N, S. Collect all eight and they spell the brand name. The final “S” stopper shows the horse finishing the race.
The design links two traditions strongly associated with Kentucky: bourbon whiskey and thoroughbred racing.
Vanilla, caramel, citrus and oak
The Original Single Barrel is bottled at 46.5% ABV; the Japanese market bottle is 750ml.
Official tasting notes describe a creamy vanilla nose with caramel and butterscotch, supported by baking spices such as clove, nutmeg and cinnamon.
The palate combines sweetness with citrus and oak.
Because the bourbon comes from one barrel at a time, subtle variation is expected. That individuality is not a flaw to be corrected; it is the central idea behind Blanton’s.

Introduced in 1984 as the world’s first commercial single-barrel bourbon, Blanton’s selects one mature barrel from Warehouse H and preserves its identity through to the bottle. The barrel number, dump date and warehouse information make the underlying idea unusually tangible: this bottle came from this particular cask.
