Château d’Yquem 2005 | 141g/L of Richness Balanced by Sauternes Precision

Not simply sweetness: 141g/L of residual sugar held in balance by taut acidity and mineral tension.

Château d’Yquem 2005 is a long-lived botrytised sweet wine from the only estate classified Premier Cru Supérieur in Sauternes.

The 2005 blend is 80% Sémillon and 20% Sauvignon Blanc, with 141g/L of residual sugar. Its richness and creamy concentration are balanced by vivid citrus-like acidity and mineral freshness.

The only Premier Cru Supérieur in Sauternes

Château d’Yquem was awarded the unique rank of Premier Cru Supérieur in the 1855 classification of Sauternes and Barsac.

Central to Yquem is an uncompromising harvest strategy based on the progression of Botrytis cinerea.

Rather than harvesting an entire parcel at once, pickers return repeatedly through the vineyard, selecting only berries that have reached the desired degree of ripeness and noble rot. The resulting yields can be exceptionally low, but concentration and complexity take priority.

2005 | The driest year since 1877

The 2005 growing season was exceptionally dry across Bordeaux.

Records describe it as the driest year since 1877, producing small, concentrated grapes.

Harvest at Yquem ran from 19 September to 28 October.

Across that extended picking period, the team waited for the right combination of maturity and botrytis, selecting concentrated fruit in successive passes.

80% Sémillon, 20% Sauvignon Blanc

The 2005 blend is 80% Sémillon and 20% Sauvignon Blanc.

Sémillon provides body, viscosity and flavours reminiscent of honey, apricot and ripe peach, while Sauvignon Blanc contributes citrus, herbal lift and a sharper line of acidity.

The signature of Yquem is therefore not sweetness alone, but the coexistence of concentration and tension.

141g/L residual sugar, balanced by acidity

The 2005 contains 141g/L of residual sugar.

Despite that richness, critical tastings repeatedly emphasise taut acidity and mineral energy.

Sugar, acidity, botrytis-derived spice and mineral character are integrated into a long finish that remains fresh rather than heavy.

Apricot, white peach, saffron and beeswax

Tasting records for the 2005 mention apricot, white peach, dried fig, grilled pineapple, honey, saffron and beeswax.

Other notes include blood orange, pink grapefruit, candied ginger, jasmine tea, chamomile and chalk.

Ripe fruit, botrytis spice, flowers, citrus and minerals overlap in layers, with the aromatic focus shifting as the wine opens.

A sweet wine capable of ageing for decades

Château d’Yquem itself describes the wine as capable of ageing for twenty, fifty, one hundred years or more.

In youth, fruit, flowers and citrus are prominent. With time, the colour moves from bright straw toward gold, amber and eventually mahogany, while caramel, dried fruit, spice and roasted notes become increasingly complex.

With both concentration and acidity, 2005 has the structure required for very long development.

2005 also marked the beginning of Yquem’s 15L Nebuchadnezzar

The 2005 vintage also holds a special place in Yquem’s bottling history.

According to the château, 2005 was the first vintage for which a limited 15-litre Nebuchadnezzar was produced, alongside the estate’s more familiar bottle formats.

For a wine known for extraordinary longevity, the creation of such a large-format bottle became an especially symbolic way to preserve the vintage.

A commemorative wine for the year 2005

For someone born in 2005, married in 2005 or connected to a company or project founded that year, Château d’Yquem 2005 can also carry strong commemorative meaning.

Great Sauternes follows a different ageing path from red wine and can remain compelling for extraordinarily long periods.
