Sine Qua Non E Grenache 2015 | Eleven Confessions Vineyard and a 100-Point Tribute to Elaine

The letter “E,” a portrait of Elaine Krankl, and one of Sine Qua Non’s most acclaimed Grenache releases.

Sine Qua Non E Grenache Eleven Confessions Vineyard 2015 is a Grenache-dominant single-vineyard red made entirely from estate-grown fruit at Eleven Confessions Vineyard in Sta. Rita Hills, California.

The blend is 82% Grenache, 12% Syrah, 5% Petite Sirah and 1% Viognier. It was fermented with 56% whole clusters and matured for around 38 months in French oak, 28% new. The 2015 received 100 points from both Wine Advocate and Vinous.

Sine Qua Non | A winery built on never repeating the same thing

Sine Qua Non was created in California by Manfred and Elaine Krankl.

The Latin phrase “sine qua non” means “something indispensable” or “without which, nothing.”

For many years, the estate became famous for changing not only its labels but also its wine names from vintage to vintage, refusing to repeat the same presentation twice.

As a result, individual Sine Qua Non releases often feel less like successive annual editions and more like separate works in their own right.

Eleven Confessions Vineyard | Estate fruit from Sta. Rita Hills

All of the fruit for this wine comes from the Krankls’ estate-owned Eleven Confessions Vineyard in the Sta. Rita Hills AVA of Santa Barbara County.

The site is notably cool for Rhône varieties such as Grenache and Syrah.

To ripen these varieties fully, yields are kept extremely low and hang time can extend very late into the season, sometimes into November. That slow maturation is central to the concentration and complexity of the fruit.

The name Eleven Confessions is associated with the eleven clones planted in the vineyard.

The 2015 “E” | A Grenache dedicated to Elaine Krankl

The 2015 Grenache was given the simple name “E.”

The letter stands for Elaine Krankl, Manfred’s wife and partner.

The label carries a portrait of Elaine drawn by Manfred himself.

The companion 2015 Syrah was named “M” for Manfred, making the two wines a personal pair as well as a reflection of Sine Qua Non’s playful approach to naming and label art.

82% Grenache in a four-variety blend

The final blend is 82% Grenache, 12% Syrah, 5% Petite Sirah and 1% Viognier.

Grenache forms the core, while Syrah adds colour and structure, Petite Sirah contributes density and tannin, and the small amount of Viognier lifts the aromatic profile.

Rather than pursuing varietal purity alone, the blend uses supporting grapes to make the Grenache feel broader and more three-dimensional.

56% whole cluster and around 38 months in French oak

The wine was fermented with 56% whole clusters.

Whole-cluster fermentation adds not only fruit character but also herbal, spicy and stem-derived aromas, together with a more complex tannic architecture.

It was then matured for around 38 months in French oak, with 28% new oak, using a combination of barriques and larger-format vessels.

Despite the long élevage, the oak does not dominate; it binds fruit, earth, spice and mineral character into a single dense structure.

Kirsch, blackberry pie, truffle and iron

Wine Advocate described the wine as deep garnet-purple in colour.

The aromatic profile includes kirsch, blackberry pie, Black Forest cake and anise.

Around that dense fruit are more savoury notes of wood smoke, grilled meat, fragrant earth, truffle, iron ore, wild sage, rose-hip tea and Indian spice.

This is not simply a rich, sweet-fruited California Grenache; the fruit is layered with earth, meat, smoke and mineral complexity.

Power with exceptionally fine tannins

The palate is full-bodied and intensely concentrated.

Yet the tannins supporting that scale are unusually fine and detailed.

Jeb Dunnuck also highlighted cassis, white and black pepper, flowers and graphite, together with the wine’s purity and ultra-fine tannic structure.

The tension between sheer power and delicacy is one of the defining qualities of the 2015 E Grenache.

100 points from Wine Advocate and Vinous

The 2015 E Grenache received 100 points from Wine Advocate and 100 points from Vinous, as well as 98+ points from Jeb Dunnuck.

Production was recorded at approximately 900 cases of 750ml bottles, together with 228 magnums and 30 double magnums.

With inherently small production and global collector demand, it has become increasingly difficult to encounter on the market.

Grenache ripened slowly in the cool Sta. Rita Hills, with yields kept extremely low. The portrait of Elaine, dense dark fruit, earth, smoke, spice and twin 100-point scores make the 2015 E one of the defining expressions of Sine Qua Non’s Eleven Confessions Vineyard.
