Emmanuel Rouget Cros Parantoux 2016 & 2020 | Henri Jayer’s Vosne-Romanée Legacy
Just over one hectare in Vosne-Romanée, once neglected ground and later transformed by Henri Jayer into one of Burgundy’s most celebrated vineyards: this is Cros Parantoux.
Here we present two vintages of Emmanuel Rouget Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Cros Parantoux: 2016 and 2020.
They come from the same tiny climat and the same producer, yet they show strikingly different expressions. The 2016 is defined by precision, acidity and tension. The 2020 is richer and more concentrated, but still remarkably focused. Tasted side by side, they reveal how clearly Cros Parantoux transmits both place and vintage.
Cros Parantoux: the vineyard Henri Jayer brought back to life

Cros Parantoux is a Premier Cru climat in Vosne-Romanée measuring only about 1.01 hectares.
Today, its vines are divided between just two producers: Emmanuel Rouget and Domaine Méo-Camuzet.
The vineyard owes much of its modern reputation to Henri Jayer, one of the defining figures of twentieth-century Burgundy.
The site had been largely neglected, with quarry-like ground, brush and large rocks close to the surface. Jayer began acquiring parcels in the early 1950s, cleared and replanted the land, and by 1970 had assembled around 0.715 hectares. In 1978 he released Cros Parantoux as a separate wine for the first time.
Located immediately above the Grand Cru Richebourg, Cros Parantoux remains classified Premier Cru. Its tiny scale, distinctive site and Jayer’s legacy, however, have made it one of the most closely followed vineyards in Vosne-Romanée.
From Henri Jayer to Emmanuel Rouget
Emmanuel Rouget is Henri Jayer’s nephew and one of the principal heirs to his winemaking tradition.
Rouget began taking over Jayer’s work from the late 1980s and gradually established his own domaine while continuing to farm and vinify parcels connected to the family.
The approach remains closely associated with the Jayer school: low yields, close attention to ripeness, destemmed fruit, cold pre-fermentation maceration and élevage designed to preserve purity, texture and freshness.
Rouget does not simply reproduce a historical formula. His choices adapt to the vineyard and vintage, allowing Cros Parantoux to retain its identity while each year remains distinct.
2016: precision, freshness and mineral tension
The 2016 Burgundy growing season was shaped by severe spring frost and disease pressure, followed by a dry and sunny second half of the season. Vosne-Romanée was relatively fortunate compared with several neighbouring areas, and Cros Parantoux itself was only lightly affected by frost.
The resulting wine combines concentration with striking freshness.
The aromatic profile moves through blackberry, raspberry, violet, black tea, spice and cool stone-like notes. The fruit is deep, but the defining feature is its line of acidity: precise, energetic and persistent.
Rather than density alone, the 2016 is about definition. Fruit, acidity and mineral character are drawn together with unusual clarity, giving the wine a tightly focused expression of Cros Parantoux.
2020: concentration with silky power
2020 was one of Burgundy’s hottest and driest growing seasons of the modern era. Harvest began exceptionally early, and the red wines were marked by deeply coloured fruit, high concentration and substantial tannin.
At the best addresses, however, ripeness was matched by freshness and tension.
Rouget’s Cros Parantoux 2020 shows dark cherry, raspberry, cassis, violet and sweet spice. The palate is broad and silky, with generous fruit framed by fine tannins and firm acidity.
Where 2016 feels more linear and chiselled, 2020 is more enveloping and powerful. Yet it never becomes simply heavy: the finish remains focused, long and distinctly energetic.
2016 and 2020: two vintages, one vineyard
2016 emphasises freshness, acidity, mineral tension and precision.
2020 brings riper fruit, greater volume, silky texture and concentration.
What links them is purity of fruit, length and an ability to combine intensity with finesse.
Cros Parantoux does not erase the character of a vintage. Instead, it gives each year a clear framework. That is what makes these two bottles especially compelling when considered together.
