Jacques Selosse Initial | Three Grand Crus, Three Vintages in One Blanc de Blancs

The entry point to Selosse — yet already a complete expression of the house.

Jacques Selosse Initial is a 100% Chardonnay Blanc de Blancs from the Grand Cru villages of Avize, Cramant and Oger in the Côte des Blancs.

It blends three consecutive vintages, is shaped through barrel ageing, and is finished with restrained dosage. Ripe fruit, toast, beeswax, chalk and salinity come together in a cuvée that acts as the clearest introduction to the Selosse style.

Jacques Selosse | Champagne as a wine of place

Anselme Selosse transformed the family domaine into one of Champagne’s most influential grower-producers.

From the 1970s onward, he approached Champagne not simply as sparkling wine, but as a wine capable of expressing vineyard, soil, vine age and vintage with the same seriousness often associated with Burgundy.

Low yields, fully ripe fruit, barrel fermentation and maturation, and restrained dosage all contribute to the distinctly vinous texture of Selosse Champagne.

Initial | The beginning of the range

As its name suggests, Initial is the natural starting point in the Selosse range.

But “entry level” is misleading. It is made exclusively from Grand Cru Chardonnay, blends multiple vintages, and undergoes both barrel and extended bottle ageing before release.

Even at the beginning of the range, the wine already carries the density, texture and complexity that define the producer.

Avize, Cramant and Oger

The Chardonnay for Initial comes from the Grand Cru villages of Avize, Cramant and Oger.

Selosse’s technical information identifies the fruit as coming primarily from lower-slope sites.

Recent Wine Advocate notes describe these parcels as mainly south-facing, with a minority facing east, and positioned lower than the higher-slope vineyards used for V.O.

The result is a wine that retains the chalky mineral identity of the Côte des Blancs while showing more breadth, flesh and generosity.

A blend of three consecutive vintages

Initial is built from three consecutive vintages.

A recent disgorgement from April 2025, for example, was based on the 2019 vintage with reserve wines from 2018 and 2017.

This structure combines the energy of the youngest wine with the added complexity of the two preceding vintages.

One year in barrel

Oak is central to the Selosse method.

Primary fermentation takes place in a mix of 228-litre pièces, 400-litre fûts and 600-litre demi-muids.

The wines are then held for around one year in barrel, with a proportion of new barrels added to the rotation each year.

The aim is not simply to add oak flavour, but to let the wine evolve slowly with controlled oxygen contact, building texture, savoury depth and integration.

More than three years on lees, with dosage that varies by disgorgement

Selosse’s technical sheet indicates that Initial spends more than three years ageing before disgorgement.

The dosage is not fixed and has changed over time.

Older technical material lists approximately 5g/L, while recent bottles have appeared at 2.7g/L for an April 2025 disgorgement and 2.5g/L for another July 2025 disgorgement.

For this reason, the disgorgement date is an important part of understanding an individual bottle of Initial.

Orange peel, peach, dried apricot and beeswax

Recent releases have shown aromas of orange peel, peach, dried apricot, toasted bread and beeswax.

Other disgorgements have highlighted lemon confit, marzipan, white flowers and chalk.

The ripe fruit and savoury, lightly oxidative complexity are balanced by the chalk and salinity of the Côte des Blancs.

Rich fruit, vibrant acidity and a saline finish

Initial is full-bodied and unusually vinous for Champagne.

Recent reviews have repeatedly praised its vibrant acidity, fine mousse and long saline finish.

The wine can be generous and concentrated, yet it finishes with freshness and mineral definition rather than weight.

Initial versus V.O. | Lower slopes and higher slopes

V.O. — Version Originale is another Blanc de Blancs built from Avize, Cramant and Oger.

Initial comes mainly from lower-slope sites and tends to show greater breadth and fruit volume.

V.O. is drawn primarily from hillside parcels and receives longer ageing with lower dosage, resulting in a more linear, chalk-driven and mineral style.

The comparison shows how clearly Selosse uses vineyard position to create two distinct expressions from the same three villages.

Initial versus Substance | Three vintages and a solera

Another defining Selosse cuvée is Substance.

Initial combines three consecutive vintages, while Substance uses a solera-inspired reserve system that continuously layers wines from many years.

Initial captures the harmony of three vintages at a particular moment; Substance is built around the accumulation of time itself.

Around 2,700 cases a year — and still difficult to find

Selosse’s technical material lists annual production of Initial at approximately 2,700 cases.

That makes it one of the more widely produced Selosse cuvées, yet global demand remains far greater than supply.

It may be the starting point of the range, but even this “entry” wine has become exceptionally difficult to obtain consistently.
