Yamazaki 18 & Hakushu 18 LIMITED EDITION | Two Duty-Free Expressions

Two of Japan’s defining single malts, each aged for at least 18 years, presented in special airport duty-free editions.

Yamazaki 18 Years Old LIMITED EDITION and Hakushu 18 Years Old LIMITED EDITION have circulated as special presentations for Japan’s airport duty-free channel. Distinctive labels and dedicated presentation boxes set them apart visually from standard domestic releases.

Inside the bottle, the two house styles could hardly be more different. Yamazaki leans toward mature dried fruit, chocolate and spice. Hakushu combines ripe tropical fruit with freshness and a gentle smoky finish. The shared age statement highlights how differently two Suntory distilleries can express eighteen years of maturation.

LIMITED EDITION bottles made for airport duty-free

Yamazaki 18 and Hakushu 18 LIMITED EDITION have been documented in market and auction records as Japan airport duty-free exclusive presentations.

The most obvious difference is presentation. Bottles carry the “LIMITED EDITION” designation and have been sold with dedicated wooden presentation cases and outer packaging, giving them a distinctly ceremonial character.

Suntory’s current Japanese product pages do not describe a separate recipe or distinct liquid specification for these duty-free LIMITED EDITION presentations. For that reason, the tasting profiles below follow Suntory’s official notes for Yamazaki 18 Years Old and Hakushu 18 Years Old.

Yamazaki 18 LIMITED EDITION | Deep maturity shaped by Spanish oak

Yamazaki 18 Years Old is built around malt whiskies aged for at least 18 years, with Spanish-oak-matured components at its core.

Suntory describes the whisky through depth and mature richness. Dried-fruit sweetness and chocolate from long oak maturation are layered with the complexity of mature Mizunara-aged whisky.

The colour is reddish amber.

On the nose: raisin, apricot and chocolate.

The palate brings honeyed sweetness, sweet-and-sour fruit and spice, followed by a long, deep finish of mature fruit and lingering acidity.

After eighteen years or more, Yamazaki’s layered sweetness and cask character settle into a dense, composed style with considerable depth.

Hakushu 18 LIMITED EDITION | Ripe fruit and refined forest smoke

Hakushu 18 Years Old is composed of malt whiskies matured for at least 18 years.

It retains the freshness associated with Hakushu while adding the depth, sweetness and rich oak character of extended ageing.

The colour is deep gold.

The nose shows melon, mango and milk caramel, with a subtle smoky accent.

On the palate, honey-like sweetness meets gentle acidity. The finish carries ripe fruit into a smooth, lingering smoky note.

What makes Hakushu 18 distinctive is that long maturation does not erase the distillery’s sense of freshness; instead, mature fruit and smoke deepen it.

Same age statement, two very different expressions

Yamazaki 18 centres on raisin, apricot, chocolate and spice, with a dense and expansive mature profile.

Hakushu 18 brings melon, mango and honeyed sweetness together with restrained smoke and a fresher overall impression.

Both are Suntory single malts aged for at least eighteen years, yet their directions are clearly different, shaped by distillery environment, spirit character and cask selection.

Placed together, the pair offers a clear view of how Yamazaki and Hakushu have developed distinct mature house styles within the same Japanese whisky tradition.

LIMITED EDITION as a complete presentation

These two releases are defined not only by the whisky, but also by the way they are presented.

The dedicated wooden cases give both bottles a presence distinct from the standard 18-year-old releases. Their airport duty-free background adds another layer to their identity, making them special presentations of two of Suntory’s best-known age-stated single malts.

The mature spirit and the presentation work together: two different expressions of eighteen years, packaged as LIMITED EDITION releases.
